50+ 5 star Google Reviews ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Are you like the hundreds of people I have worked with, who have had an operation and then next to no follow up care? Having surgery is often just the beginning of your recovery.

Whether you've had an Achilles tendon repair, knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, shoulder surgery, hip replacement or another orthopaedic procedure, the rehabilitation that follows can have a major influence on how confidently you return to everyday life.

At CR Physiotherapy Clinic in Menston, we provide personalised post-operative physiotherapy and rehabilitation to help you restore movement, rebuild strength and progressively return to the activities that matter to you.  Chris has rehabilitated hundreds of athletes and patients back from surgery.

Your rehabilitation programme will be tailored to your surgery, your current ability and your individual goals.  We can work alongside your surgeon to give you the best outcomes.

Sometimes, just having someone who can guide you and give you confidence is all it takes to get your recovery on track.

Understand your recovery. Build your strength. Get back to doing what you enjoy.

Physiotherapy after surgery

After an operation, it's normal to experience some combination of:

  • Pain and stiffness

  • Swelling

  • Reduced strength

  • Loss of movement

  • Muscle wasting

  • Changes to your walking pattern

  • Reduced balance and confidence

  • Difficulty returning to exercise

  • Anxiety about putting too much load through the operated area

Knowing what you should and shouldn't be doing can also be difficult.

I see many people who have recently had surgery and been left to their own devices.

They don't have any idea how to come off crutches.  They don't know when to take the protective boot off.

I hear questions like 'when can I put my weight through this?' or 'when can I start exercising?'

You may have been given some initial exercises by your surgical team, but as your recovery progresses, your rehabilitation needs to progress with it.

That's where physiotherapy can help.

The aim isn't simply to get you moving again. It's to progressively restore your mobility, strength, confidence and physical capacity so that you can return to your normal activities.

Rehabilitation tailored to your surgery

Every operation is different, and rehabilitation needs to reflect that.

Your programme will take into account:

  • The type of surgery you've had

  • How long ago your operation was

  • Your surgeon's rehabilitation protocol

  • Your current movement and strength

  • Pain and swelling

  • Your work and lifestyle

  • Your previous level of activity

  • Your individual goals

Where appropriate, I'll work alongside any guidance provided by your surgeon or medical team.

Objective assessment and progress tracking

Recovery isn't just about how you feel.

Where appropriate, I'll use objective measures to track your progress, which may include:

  • Range of movement

  • Muscle strength

  • Calf or limb circumference

  • Balance

  • Walking pattern

  • Functional movement

  • Exercise capacity

  • Single-leg strength

  • Side-to-side differences

This allows us to identify where you're improving and where further work is needed.

It also gives you something tangible to work towards.

What happens during your first appointment?

Your first appointment will begin with a detailed discussion about your surgery and recovery so far.

We'll look at:

Your surgery

  • What procedure you had

  • When it took place

  • Any post-operative complications

  • Your surgeon's advice and restrictions

  • Any follow-up appointments or imaging

Your current symptoms

We'll discuss pain, swelling, stiffness, movement and how your symptoms are affecting everyday life.

Your physical function

Depending on your stage of rehabilitation, I'll assess relevant areas such as:

  • Movement

  • Strength

  • Balance

  • Gait

  • Functional capacity

  • The operated area and surrounding joints/muscles

Your goals

Most importantly, we'll establish what you actually want to achieve.

Your goal might simply be to walk normally again.

Or it might be to return to the gym, run a marathon or get back to playing sport.

Your rehabilitation programme should reflect that goal.

Experienced post-operative rehabilitation

I'm a Chartered Physiotherapist with more than 15 years' experience working across professional sport, musculoskeletal physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

I've worked with professional athletes in football and other sports, including experience with Bradford City AFC and Rotherham United, where rehabilitation and return-to-performance were an important part of my role.

That experience has shaped the way I approach post-operative rehabilitation.

While you don't need to be a professional athlete to benefit from this approach, the principles are the same:

Assess.
Load appropriately.
Build strength.
Progress function.
Return to your goals.
