Common Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain can occur for many reasons and often involves more than just the hip joint itself. We see a lot of sports related hip problems, but also many which have gradually come on over time too.
Common conditions we treat include:
Hip Osteoarthritis
A common condition affecting the joint through degenerative changes and cartilage loss.
Femoroacetabular Impingement
Changes to the hip joint which can cause pain, catching and loss of movement in the hip.
Bursitis
Pain affecting a bursa in the hip, most commonly on the outside of the hip.
Athletic Pubalgia
A complex condition using involving several factors including pelvic dysfunction, tendinopathies and bone marrow oedema.
Tendinopathy
Commonly affecting the hamstring, hip flexor, adductors or psoas in people who exercise. Gluteal tendinopathy is another condition we see frequently in clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I rest hip pain?
Complete rest is rarely the answer. In many cases, the right balance of movement, strengthening and gradual loading helps recovery more effectively.
Do I need a scan?
Most hip problems can be diagnosed through a detailed assessment. If imaging is required, we can advise on the most appropriate next steps.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the type of injury and your goals. Some people improve quickly, while others with longer-term or more complex problems may require a longer rehabilitation programme.
Can I continue exercising?
Often, yes. We will help you modify activity so you can remain as active as possible during recovery.
