Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can occur for many reasons and often involves more than just the ankle joint itself. Problems with strength, balance, mobility, footwear, training load or previous injuries can all contribute. Chris has a particular interest in the foot and ankle, and we see many patients with ankle problems in clinic.
Common conditions we treat include:
Ankle Sprains
Ligament injuries are one of the most common causes of ankle pain. Many people continue to experience pain, stiffness, weakness or repeated sprains long after the initial injury.
Achilles Tendinopathy
Pain, stiffness or swelling at the back of the ankle, particularly during running, walking or first thing in the morning.
Peroneal Tendon Pain
Pain on the outside of the ankle, often aggravated by running, uneven ground or sporting activities.
Tibialis Posterior Tendinopathy
Pain on the inside of the ankle or arch of the foot, often associated with prolonged walking or standing.
Osteoarthritis
Joint stiffness, swelling and pain that can affect walking and daily activities.
Running Injuries
Changes in training volume, footwear, speed work or hill running can place increased stress on the ankle and surrounding structures.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Expert rehabilitation following ankle fractures, ligament reconstruction, Achilles tendon repair or other ankle surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I rest ankle pain?
Complete rest is rarely the answer. In many cases, the right balance of movement, strengthening and gradual loading helps recovery more effectively.
Do I need a scan?
Most ankle problems can be diagnosed through a detailed assessment. If imaging is required, we can advise on the most appropriate next steps.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the type of injury and your goals. Some people improve quickly, while others with longer-term or more complex problems may require a longer rehabilitation programme.
Can I continue exercising?
Often, yes. We will help you modify activity so you can remain as active as possible during recovery.
